Internship Program Information

BACKGROUND

The Doing Business unit offers an internship program during the spring, summer and fall for students pursuing an advanced degree.

Interns will apply their operational, research, writing, interpersonal and language skills to one of the 12 indicators covered in the Doing Business study: Starting a Business, Dealing with Construction Permits, Getting Electricity, Registering Property, Getting Credit, Protecting Minority Investors, Paying Taxes, Trading across Borders, Enforcing Contracts, Resolving Insolvency, Employing Workers and Contracting with the Government.

Results of data collection, research and analysis are presented in the Doing Business study and on the website as well as in academic papers and country reports that inform advisory work and operations for client countries.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist with questionnaire generation and dissemination processes
  • Assist with data collection
  • Assist with data entry of respondent contact information
  • Assist with preparation of comparative analysis related to the set of indicators on a country by country and regional basis
  • Assist with preparation of presentations
  • Assist with government meetings and video conferences
  • Assist with preparation of case studies
  • Assist with identifying new respondents
  • Assist with production of the report

“My internship with Doing Business exposed me to various aspects of business regulations around the world. Working with experts from various parts of the world to collect information is a unique experience which I still enjoy today. The diverse work environment and the people contribute to my positive experience with Doing Business. I was assigned to two topics during my internship and was lucky to work with two team leads who treated me as an analyst and exposed me to all aspects of the project including meetings with government officials. Finally, this internship opened the door to a consultancy and later a staff position."

SELECTION CRITERIA:

  • Applicant must receive academic credit or monetary compensation from the university or a donor to be eligible for an internship
  • Applicant must be currently enrolled in an advanced degree
  • Demonstrated research and analytical skills and experience pertaining to private sector development issues
  • Excellent command of Microsoft Excel
  • Well-developed interpersonal and team-player skills; ability to operate independently and under supervision
  • High level of energy
  • Proven ability to handle several tasks simultaneously and deal with rapidly shifting priorities under pressure
  • Ability to operate in multicultural environments and build effective working relations
  • Relevant professional/academic experience preferred
  • Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills in English and one of the following languages: Arabic, French, Portuguese, Russian or Spanish
